Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The receptionist is extremely unfriendly and can be rude when asked questions. The nursing staff seems uninformed and made several mistakes in my time there. I had to follow up on things they told me they would take care of and everything seemed disorganized. No one assisted us with understanding the financial pieces and discussing insurance. We were made to feel that using our insurance was wrong and a pain for them. We were also given different pricing by different people, charged for procedures that never took place and got attitude for trying to clarify financial or insurance questions.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Many mistakes were made, no sympathy or concern. Communication about treatment was extremely poor. Appointments were very brief and comments were made about adoption that were extremely insensitive to our situation.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Many communication issues, messed up medications, forgot to send schedules, sent wrong dates on schedules and failed to follow up. I had to call numerous times in a 3 month period to clear up mistakes, to get correct dates, to handle medication that was given in error and to clarify and follow up on misdirection of my care.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol

How was your experience with Shona Murray?
Dr. Murray was curt and unsympathetic at times. Did not communicate with the staff about my treatment and was frustrated with me for their mistakes. She did not perform any of the big parts of my transfer. At my final appointment she made incredibly rude comments about my fertility moving forward and the future of our family. She also made very negative assumptions about my condition that were not backed up by any tests whatsoever.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shona Murray?
Be your own advocate and speak up. Don't trust them to communicate well and ask questions about your care. She would not be the doctor I would choose to see in this practice. Always ask them to test first before they make assumptions about your care. If there is a change in drugs, make sure that all staff are on the same page and that you are not prescribed wrong medications.
Describe the protocols Shona Murray used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We used birth control, estrogen patches and vaginal progesterone. We used ultrasounds to check lining and a stitch was put in my cervix for the transfer.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shona Murray.
Our transfer cost in total around 7 thousand including medications.

Strengths [of U of CO -Co Springs]: Small office which makes it easier to not feel like a number. Typically don't have to even sign in after the 2nd appointment. Nurses are amazing. Lab technicians are also very kind. Weaknesses: ultrasounds were never completed on Saturday only Sunday which I felt for optimal timing should be open 7 days a week. Weekend appointments are with whoever is on call and they don't convey their results to the primary doctor. I had a cycle cancelled due to lack of communication between the on call provider. Monitoring appointments typically ALWAYS ran behind by about 1 hr. Billing can be difficult to coordinate with insurance-I was told my insurance definitely would not cover IUI which turned out to be false.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
My first encounter with Dr. Murray I felt like she really cared about me as an individual and would work well with us to achieve our goals of pregnancy. However, as the months progressed she became more blunt, rushed, and sometimes came across as uncaring.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
The nurses were wonderful and probably the reason I stayed as long as I did. Jeanie did most of my monitoring appointments and was always so incredibly kind. She comforted me many times when I was in tears about the results of the ultrasound. She also was incredibly thoughtful about preserving my privacy during ultrasounds (such as keeping the room dark, drape in place, etc). The few ultrasounds I had with Dr. Murray she kept the lights bright, and threw the drape completely off me.

How was your experience with Shona Murray?
When I first met Dr. Murray she was skeptical that I even had infertility even though we had been trying to conceive for a year and I was convinced there was something wrong. She wanted us to continue trying on our own for several more months and I refused and we began timed intercourse cycles.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shona Murray?
Make sure you are your own advocate and familiarize yourself with different treatment options, etc.
Describe the protocols Shona Murray used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Began with timed intercourse cycles. She wanted me to bypass clomid and letrozole completely because she didn't believe they had good results (even though I had never tried either of those) and placed me on follistim/gonal f. Although she monitored me very closely, when I did not respond to the medication as she had hoped she began to become openly very frustrated; she told me that she had "never" had a patient like me before and she wanted me to bypass IUI (without trying with clomid/letrozole) and go to IVF. She also quoted the success statistics per cycle of timed intercourse with injections to be the same or higher than an IUI cycle. I'm a RN and we left her care after I spent time reading the medical guidelines and newest published research studies which I was fortunate to have access to- all of which contradicted her approach.

I think their team [at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)] of embryologists are wonderful. Very skilled. They have two locations, one in Colorado Springs and one in Denver. All retrieval and transfers are done up in Denver. But all monitoring can be done in Colorado Springs which was convenient to me. They really try to help make sure they are using what insurance benefits are available. And if there are any trials or anything to try those as well.

Dr. Murray was amazing. She really talked me through everything and she took into consideration my feelings and what I wanted and how I wanted to proceed in terms of treatment plans.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
The staff is amazing at the office. I had grown close to many. A few of the girls even held the local Resolve infertility support group which provided me with all the support I needed through many difficult times.
How was your experience with Shona Murray?
Dr. Murray really does recommend what she thinks is best but if you have other feelings she will listen and take your wants into consideration as well.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shona Murray?
As with the entire journey, be your own best advocate. Be educated and if you feel you should be taking a more or less aggressive course of treatment say something.
Describe the protocols Shona Murray used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I suffer from PCOS so they had to watch for OHSS. So they did entry of monitoring. I was surprised when they for 21 eggs. 17 fertilized through icsi and 8 made it to 5 day blasts.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shona Murray.
I believe my IVF cycle was around $15,000 with meds and embryo storage. IUI cycles were around $3,000 with meds.

our treatment started with femara as we had tried clomid for 4 cycles with my gynecologist. she raised my level of femara each cycle or added a steroid (cant remember the name now) each cycle I would show a follicle and all but one cycle used ovidrel to induce ovulation. the last cycle we used ovidrel and iui.

How was your experience with Serena Dovey?
She really reviewed our history before each visits. She obviously cares and gives us information in easy to digest ways. She explains it fully, and never rushes me during appointments. I feel very comfortable with her, and feel understood.
Describe the protocols Serena Dovey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
With my history with PCOS and clomid, she suggested we use letrazole and booster shots. Because we've done so many rounds of clomid without success, she is starting us at the middle dosage of letrazole. I am so glad to not feel like we're wasting a month of time on a lower dosage. When I said I wanted to do IUI, she didn't question that. She accepted our choice and we made a plan.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Serena Dovey.

Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Strengths: cheap. Weaknesses: disorganized, chaotic, unprofessional, and poor communication skills among practice team members.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Polotsky did not take the time to explain the diagnosis and treatment plan adequately enough. As we embarked on our treatment plan, we received mixed interpretations from his staff on the same information. During one round of IUI, one nurse stated that the response was adequate to the medication while another stated that it was not. Given the lack of communication, mixed interpretation of the same clinical data, we could not trust that this clinic was delivering high quality care.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
I have even more complaints of the nursing staff. They were incredibly disorganized and overall insensitive. First, the did not send in the prescription for Ovidrel on time in order for me to pick it up at the pharmacy. After navigating the dysfunctional call center, I got a hold of the fellow on call who sent in the prescription. The nurse called later and simply stated that she forgot. Furthermore, after the first round of IUI, the nurse informed us that my wife had an adequate response to clomid. For our second round, a different nurse (we always saw a different nurse!) said that our response to that first round was inadequate. Both nurses had the exact same data (follicle count and size) but with vastly different interpretations. Additionally, this second nurse told us that "IVF may be unethical", implying futility to even considering this approach. My wife is young (32 years old) with diminished ovarian reserve, but hardly at the point of futility. Furthermore, I am not sure how this clinic allows nurses to render these decisions and recommendations. As Dr. Polotsky is the division chief and medical director, he is ultimately responsible for the education, training, and scope of practice of these nurses and it is unacceptable.

How was your experience with Alex Polotsky?
Dr. Polotsky always appeared more interested in seeing his next patient than actually spending time with us. The only instance in which he actually spent any time talking with us was after I complained and requested a personal phone call from him. If you are okay with a technician taking care of your reproductive needs, then he may be a good fit, but if you are looking for a relationship, go elsewhere.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky?
Shop around, seek second opinions, and make him explain every detail.

How was your experience with Alex Polotsky?
I had decent experiences with Dr. Polotsky up until my miscarriage. I'm in the healthcare field and understand there are no guarantees. My first transfer was unexpected and we had never even discussed that a fresh transfer would be an option until the day of. My frozen transfer things were more controlled. When a heartbeat and fetal pole were difficult to obtain at 7 weeks after being clear at 6, he sent to a more specialized ultrasound tech/mfm which I appreciated. However when I was then diagnosed with a missed miscarriage he recommended I come into the office 2 days later. Being emotional and hormonal and wanting the nightmare of being done with my IVF journey (or so we thought) I agreed although I had reservations when he said it would not be with sedation. The procedure itself was human torture. I was given no pain meds, the used lidocaine but didn't even let it work. I finally after screaming involuntarily for what felt like forever we stopped the procedure and I had to take meds to finish miscarrying after all. There was no sympathy, no empathy. I've worked in teaching hospitals for 15 years and am all for residents learning. But on multiple occasions (including my miscarriage procedure which I've asked 2 other REs and they said they wouldn't do that unless a woman was hemorrhaging to death) it was not appropriate to have a resident perform procedures. I can think of a few other cases where the resident clearly had no idea what they we doing and I was a dummy for them to fumble around with.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky?
Remember that we are humans going through something so emotional and hard for something we want so badly. We're not a learning opportunity for everyone.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't remember to be honest. Was on follistim, menopur, ganirelex. Probably had mild OHSS and was treated with cabergoline but probably never should have been allowed to do a fresh transfer.

Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Very good about posting self pay prices up front. You get a discount if you self pay. They told me I could self pay and submit to my insurance to see what was covered, but I found it was hard to get the information I needed to be able to submit the things that my insurance would cover. Finally, when it was determined that they were in network with my insurance and were required to submit it, they upped all my costs and it was a nightmare to deal with them and insurance. Seemed shady. The first time I called to set an appointment I had to leave 3 messages and do an online appointment request before they called me back. Office is nice and clean and in a nice medical complex. We have to drive a few hours to get there so sometimes appointment availability was difficult. All ultrasounds and bloodwork had to be done early in the morning which was very difficult for us to get to. Some of the front desk ladies were not very friendly.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
At our first appointment, he and his intake doctor were very willing to answer all my questions. I didn't feel rushed at all. He said he was so confident that we could get a baby that he would save a spot on his wall for our baby picture. We completed all the testing and things he wanted checked and then went back for a treatment plan. Once we had all our tests results in, we went back and he would never give us a real diagnosis and I felt like things were being hidden. He was very optimistic that we would still have a baby, and that is what I focused on. He wasn't willing to try just medication and said IUI was the way to go, but didn't really tell us why. We decided to go ahead with his recommendation to try an IUI. Every appointment I saw someone different and no one could fully tell me what we were doing or answer my questions. I felt like a part in the machine-- just another patient to push through. After this treatment failed and we were not happy with how we were treated, we found another office and doctor.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
They seemed a little overwhelmed. A lot going on in the front and in the back of the office it appeared. Sometimes I felt like they just wanted me to move on.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?

How was your experience with Alex Polotsky?
I loved our first appointment with him. The second appointment we had to review tests and determine a treatment plan, I felt more rushed and like we didn't have a diagnosis. My questions were dodged and we were pushed into IUI. After the two appointments, I never saw him again-- always saw a resident or another doctor. I was never sure what our diagnosis was or what we were fixing. I felt like I was just another patient being pushed through the process. Some residents were not pleasant.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky?
He has an accent that is sometimes hard to understand. Make sure you fully understand everything when you meet with him, because you will likely not see him again.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles and their degree of success.
1 failed IUI.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alex Polotsky.
I did the self pay option which means they don't submit it to my insurance (but I was told I could do that myself) and I save 40%. I chose this because I wasn't sure what my insurance would cover. When it was determined that they were in network and legally had to submit to my insurance, they upped all the costs and changed procedures. It was a mess. If you were a self pay patient, it would probably be fine. Intake and follow up appointment were each 250$ Semen analysis- $166 Pelvic ultrasound- between 500 and 600 Hysterosalpingogram- 1,200 ish Blood work costs seemed pretty average-- maybe slightly less than other places I have tried. IUI was quoted to be 800 ish, but cost us closer to 1200 because of additional ultrasounds.

The clinic was a smaller office in the Stapleton neighborhood. It was easy to make appointments... Deanna [my nurse] is great at communicating. She explained everything well... I like Dr. Dovey as a person. She communicated well, however I did not feel like our treatment was customized. I feel like it was simply the process they give to most patients looking to do an IUI.

Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The clinic was a smaller office in the Stapleton neighborhood. It was easy to make appointments.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I felt like our process started out well. However due to the clomid, my uterine lining was thin (6MM). I am obviously not the doctor, but from the research I read, that was too thin to support a pregnancy. I was told it was fine and to move forward with the IUI without estrogen.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Deanna is great at communicating. She explained everything well.
How was your experience with Serena Dovey?
I like Dr. Dovey as a person. She communicated well, however I did not feel like our treatment was customized. I feel like it was simply the process they give to most patients looking to do an IUI.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Serena Dovey?
As always, do your own research and feel comfortable asking questions and other options.
Describe the protocols Serena Dovey used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Clomid with ovidrel then the IUI.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Serena Dovey.
Again, our insurance does not cover anything fertility. We had to pay for everything out of pocket. Their costs were not too extreme.

Another clinic in town would not let me try clomid but Dr. Polotsky let me. We already tried 3 iuis at the other clinic, so we only tried one more with Dr. Polotsky. He was fine to let us try more but we were ready for IVF at that point....[nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine was] very responsive and knowledgeable....It is a little hard to schedule things.
